The Upper Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the city of Oldsmar and The Olds Club of Florida celebrated the 57th annual Oldsmar Days the weekend of March 23-25, 2018. Yes, this is the same Olds who started both Oldsmobile and REO Motor Car Companies, thus the festivities. In 1916, Ransom Eli Olds purchased nearly 40,000 acres at the northern end of Tampa Bay and the community of Oldsmar was begun.
A carnival, parade, and car shows are the features of this weekend. Saturday, the highlights are first the parade followed by a Oldsmobile/REO show only. Sharon Edwards was this years Grand Marshall due to her contributions (meals to low income families) through her business, Platinum International with Project Pop Drop.
As you would expect the parade meanders through part of the city, carting some of the local well-known community leaders, but the special part is that they are carried by Oldsmobiles. Other Oldmobiles simply are there to display their preserved state.
The restoration of the vehicles was just superb, and there was even a member of the original Olds family present with his own REO. Tom Roe (not a misspell), had his REO present and is one of 15 surviving great-grandchildren (all the grandchildren have passed). The setting for the show is beautiful, the parade small town America, and the history real. This was truly an enjoyable experience.
