A little town called Yalaha, just south of Leesburg in Central Florida, has a very unique and well-known German bakery where the breads, cookies and pastries are baked fresh every day. A few of us decided to take the scenic back roads on a Sunday spring morning with the old cars to have lunch. Skies were overcast but the rain stayed away. We got the waves and the thumbs up all along the way. Blueberries were just coming in season and the patch next door offered pick-your-own berries. Well who could resist that? One for me, one for the bucket, one for me, one for the bucket.
As if the day wasn’t already relaxing and enjoyable, less than a few miles away was the Festivals of Speed show at the Mission Inn Resort, nestled in the tiny town of Howey-in-the-Hills. How can one pass up a car show just down the street? Our little classic car caravan received special parking.
For nearly 50 years, the Resort is one of the most picturesque places in Florida to play golf, fresh-water fish, host meetings, weddings and special events. Joe Sabatini has created an annual winter series of events showcasing the beauty of the world finest automobiles including Lamborghini, Ferrari, McLaren, Audi, Bentley, Rolls Royce, and Porsche. Custom cars, classics, antiques and specialty American cars also round out the display. Sometime the vintage wooden boats are on display equipped with ladder for inside viewing.
The Festivals of Speed series usually start in the beginning of December at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando, then moves to Amelia Island, St. Petersburg, Howey-in-the-Hills, and finishing in Atlanta at the end of May. Always set among a world-class, luxury resort with all the benefits of a perfect weekend getaway. Many of the events include a luxury lifestyle jetport reception, wine connoisseur dinners, yacht displays, ride & drive experiences, fine art and jewelry displays.
After a leisurely stroll around the grounds, we took our time traveling another set of back roads home to Orlando. If given the opportunity to attend a Festivals of Speed event, take the time to wonder at the styling and art form of the exotics while appreciating the classics of the past. You will not be disappointed. For more information, visit Festivals of Speed HERE.
