How do you celebrate turning 100? If you’re the city of Oviedo, you have a giant celebration. Thousands of people came out to enjoy a family-and-pet-friendly day of live music, carnival games, street performers, a walk through time of Oviedo’s history and much, much more. The best part, for me, was the display of Cars Through the Decades…
The city reached out to DJ Don from Cruisin Orlando who, with the help of Tara from FlaCarShows.com, arranged to have two vehicles from each decade of Oviedo’s 100 years on display. The cars and trucks were arranged by age, so that event attendees could stroll through the decades of automotive evolution. Don and Tara did not just organize the car display, they were participants as well. Don brought his 1967 Camaro (a tribute to the car in the movie Better Off Dead),
and Tara brought her 1958 Corvette. I was invited to bring my 1979 Li’l Red Express truck. I wound up parked next to a Back to the Future DeLorean, and Doc Brown was there in costume (and character) bringing smiles to kids and adults alike.
There was one very special vehicle on display, although the reason for it being there was a tragic one. We were honored to have the Oviedo Police vehicle of officer Jimmy Serrano Torres III on display. He was a patrol officer with the city since August 2021. He died in a vehicle crash just two weeks before the city’s birthday celebration, at the age of 36.
The event ran from 3:00-9:30, culminating with a laser light and fireworks show. My goal was to go as a participant, not a photographer, so I don’t have a lot of photos to share. But I did take a few of the cars…Thanks to the city of Oviedo, Cruisin Orlando, and FlaCarShows.com for organizing a fun day of activities. Thousands of people had a great day. Here’s to the next hundred years!
