From January 10 through April 30, 2026, the Tampa Bay Automobile Museum will present a new special exhibit exploring one of the most unconventional ideas ever to reach the road: the Wankel rotary engine. Titled The Wankel Rotary Engine: Innovation That Never Went Mainstream, the exhibit examines a technology that promised to reshape automotive engineering, yet ultimately became a fascinating footnote in performance history.
At the center of the story is a rare lineup of rotary-powered machines, including the NSU Spider, NSU Ro80, Mazda Cosmo Series II, Citroën GS Birotor, Hercules W2000, Norton Commander motorcycle, 1995 Mazda Eunos Cosmo, and an experimental Corvette rotary engine. Together, these vehicles trace the arc of an idea that drew major manufacturers and daring engineers into a shared pursuit of smoother, lighter, and more compact power.
The Mind Behind the Machine
The exhibit also highlights the work of German engineer Felix Wankel (1902–1988), whose unconventional thinking led to a radical departure from the traditional piston engine. In the 1950s, Wankel developed a design based on a triangular rotor spinning inside an oval-shaped housing, producing power through continuous rotation rather than the familiar up-and-down motion of pistons.
The result was an engine that ran smoothly, delivered high power from a small package, and contained fewer moving parts than conventional designs. Automakers across Europe and Japan saw potential not just for efficiency, but for a new kind of driving experience.
Promise and Limits
For a time, the rotary engine appeared poised to disrupt the industry. NSU, Mazda, Citroën, and several motorcycle manufacturers invested heavily in bringing the technology to the public. Yet real-world challenges, including fuel consumption, emissions compliance, and long-term durability, proved difficult to overcome at scale.
By the late 20th century, most companies had stepped away from rotary development, leaving Mazda as its most well-known advocate through models like the RX series. What remained was not a revolution, but a legacy of bold engineering and a devoted global following.
A Closer Look at a Mechanical Outlier
Visitors to the exhibit will find more than a display of rare vehicles. The collection offers a window into a moment when automakers were willing to place experimental ideas into
everyday production cars and motorcycles, testing innovation in public rather than in prototypes.
Hands-On Rotary Engine Workshop
As part of the exhibition, the museum will host a Hands-On Rotary Engine Restoration Workshop on March 14 and 15, 2026, led by rotary specialist Matthew Orth. This full-day, immersive experience is designed for enthusiasts who want practical instruction in disassembly, inspection, and reliable rotary engine rebuilding techniques. With professional rotary builders becoming increasingly rare, the workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn skills essential to preserving these engines for the future.
