For those who don’t know what a Billetproof Show is, let me paraphrase, “It is meant for those who build their own traditional style rods and customs on a limited budget. NO billet-clad, digital gauge, pastel graphic, named after a fifties song trailer queens.” You may be thinking “rat-rods”, but then you’d be surprised.
To add to the festive atmosphere, was a Tallahassee band, The Intoxicators, who were lost in the 50s and 60s. Also decorating the car lot were the vintage ladies who posed next to the “show cars” just to add the element of elegance.
Of course, Don Garlits himself was there, opening up his garage (mini museum), selling his souvenirs, signing his books, and just delighting us all with his stories. Don still has “Swamp Rat” number 1, and currently is working on an electric rail dragster. A 180+ mph has been clocked, but he wants 200mph.
Did I mention that even the trophies are homemade? A truly unique experience awaits those who haven’t attended this event, and it’s a good time as well. Don may even start one of his previously raced drag racing machines for the crowd!
